A G protein alpha null mutation confers prolificacy potential in maize

Plasticity in plant development is controlled by environmental signals through largely unknown signalling networks. Signalling coupled by the heterotrimeric G protein complex underlies various developmental pathways in plants. The morphology of two plastic developmental pathways, root system architecture and female inflorescence formation, was quantitatively assessed in a mutant compact plant 2...

A null mutation in a bZIP factor confers ABA-insensitivity in Arabidopsis thaliana.

We have used a modification of the classical ABA-insensitive screen (Koornneef et al. 1984) to isolate novel mutations in the ABA signal transduction pathway of Arabidopsis thaliana. In our screen, mutants were recovered on the basis of their growth-insensitivity to ABA (GIA) rather than germination-insensitivity. Here we present the isolation of the gia1 mutant as well as the identification of...

A Sod2 null mutation confers severely reduced adult life span in Drosophila.

A null mutation for the Sod2 gene, Sod2n283, was obtained in Drosophila melanogaster. Homozygous Sod2 null (Sodn283/Sodn283) adult flies survive up to 24 hr following eclosion, a phenotype reminiscent of mice, where Sod2-/- progeny suffer neonatal lethality. Sodn283/+ heterozygotes are sensitive to oxidative stress induced by paraquat treatment.

From Many, One: Genetic Control of Prolificacy during Maize Domestication

A reduction in number and an increase in size of inflorescences is a common aspect of plant domestication. When maize was domesticated from teosinte, the number and arrangement of ears changed dramatically. Teosinte has long lateral branches that bear multiple small ears at their nodes and tassels at their tips. Maize has much shorter lateral branches that are tipped by a single large ear with ...

G alpha 12 and G alpha 13 subunits define a fourth class of G protein alpha subunits.

Heterotrimeric guanine nucleotide-binding regulatory proteins (G proteins) are central to the signaling processes of multicellular organisms. We have explored the diversity of the G protein subunits in mammals and found evidence for a large family of genes that encode the alpha subunits. Amino acid sequence comparisons show that the different alpha subunits fall into at least three classes. The...
